RED DOOM

the morning began with greasy sausage biscuits, tater tots, and coffee... we were up seven to go play with the elephant seals. it is a different time in the breeding season than when i was last at the colony so i was excited for the opportunity to see large males, pregnant females, and maybe some new pups. huge male elephant seals really are quite impressive even when laying like lard on the beach. a few were making calls and even though they were meters away you could still feel the strength in the sound. after the excitement of being field marine biologists, it was home for relaxing and rethinking mel's thesis.

night three at the RED. we very easily took over our corner area and then met up with some buddies made on previous evenings. And as usual, the corner was heavy with traffic and full of sultry looks and casual glances. Mel really hit it off with a guy who was actually interesting, but then he claimed it was ok to steal thousand dollar bikes. i hit it off with some good looking guys in trendy pink stripe shirts and coat jackets(we talked politics and green stuff), but then they found out kelley was a lawyer (a profession they were interested in), and then they didnt talk to me anymore. funny. it is red doom simply bc that was what they stamped on my hand to prove that i was over 21. really, is it a question anymore? three nights in a row closing a bar is enough. kelley is on her way home and mel and i are planning a quiet evening in.
