abel tasman national park is the smallest national park in new zealand... but really beautiful (arent they all?). it is coastal rocky coasts interspersed with golden sand beaches. even in the drizzly grey skies it was beautiful. i took a watertaxi out to a beach, viewing private water access only beaches and a fur seal colony. i even saw a new pup. i got dropped off at awaroa beach thinking i was far out enough to escaped civilization but there was a lodge there, so i got a coffee and a brownie(LOL) and continued hiking through, across onetahouti beach and to tonga quarry where i camped for the evening. there were supposed to be ten other tents there - but it was only me and that was nice. a lovely quartz sand beach camp all to myself. i awoke intermittently to rain... and still held it until it was daylight... and it was still raining. and it was still raining when i finally got up, packed my tent, and started walking. it did eventually stop raining.. but it remained gray. however being gray did not detract from the rainforest and golden beach scenery.
plus they need the rain- it hadnt rained here in six weeks. the ironic thing is that this area is said to be the sunniest spot in new zealand.
ps let me tell you that taking care of feminine needs while tramping in drizzly gray scenery or rainforest... exciting.

it is good to appreciate gray...and rain...and, what better to sleep by than raindrops on your tent?
ReplyDeleteI camped at Awaroa!! And the lodge was closed when I was there! We got lost in the mountains in the dark looking for it! Glad you got to go there.
ReplyDeletethanks for keeping us apprised of your feminine needs. you'll be happy to know that despite the 16-hour difference, our hormones are still in perfect sync. :)
