politics shmolitics

dan (the guy i am couchsurfing with in adelaide) works for the labor party and is promoting kevin 07. he even gave me a button which i am proudly sporting on my pack bc he seems like the one i would vote for. it seems that here in aussie, the current leader can call the election when he wants and there is the campaigning period and then the election - not as long and drawn out as here. howard, the current leader has been in the position forever it seems and lots of people want him out. lots of people wanted him out the last time but they apparently didnt like the alternative.

the interesting thing about being here is a lot of people are speculating about US politics (i would have said who cares - but i forget that the US politics influence everyone else). everyone comments how good a president hilary would be bc of her previous experience in the white house. good point. i hadnt thought of that. they also think a woman would be good in the white house.

i am all for women equality and all of that, but all i can think about is rednecks and sexist men where there is absolutely NO way they would vote for a woman. besides it is a YEAR away. arent there other things to think about?

  1. it's also illegal in australia to NOT vote -- they have something like a 96% turnout compared to the US's 46%. they are probably more interested because they are FORCED to make a decision, whereas here it is very easy to be apathetic and uninformed (with you as a case in point :)

isn't it interesting that india has a woman president and many people in the US can't fathom the same here? ... it's not like india is known for its gender equality.

and p.s. kim, that's called a parliamentary system.
