middle school love triangles

i had to deal with my first middle school love triangle yesterday. it made my head hurt. anne and wilma are best friends. wilma sits with george (probably bc she likes him)... and on the other side of wilma is anne.

wilma and anne asked to talk in the hallway. i questioned them as to the topic and with a little vague description i allowed it. then i went to join them. at first anne and wilma did not want to tell me what was going on, but they did.

basically george keeps saying mean things to anne. wilma told him to stop. he said no. so wilma is upset with george. anne is worried that wilma is mad at her. wilma is worried that anne is mad at her. anne is upset becuase george is saying mean things.

i mentioned that maybe george was trying to show off for wilma and she agreed. (duh) so not knowing what else to do - i made sure that anne and wilma were not mad at each other and that would agree to tell each other if they were mad so they could stop asking the other if she was mad. part one. part two was that if george was upsetting the both of them they either needed to report what he was saying (bc i had no idea) or move soemwhere else. ok fine. back to class.

george then spent the rest of reading time looking like he was crying. so i wrote him a note letting him know that he was not in trouble but that I would like for him to stay after class to talk to me and dropped it in his lap.

he stayed, but he wouldnt talk to me. he just stared. so i told him what i knew, reassured him that i was not mad at him, they were not mad at him, and that people were just upset. he just sort of stared at me and then left.

today i think things were better, but really i am no good at this. i cant even figure out my own relationships. there was no crying. and no drama. instead i made up my own drama with stick people to talk about reaction types.

  1. The sad thing is that it doesn't really get easier, or simpler, or less painful when you're older.

  2. ...and you are now a counselor? good job...maybe your "experience" is helping others...but i doubt it. it is something you gotta live thru, and hopefully learn from. hopefully!

  3. God, that takes me right back to those middle school days. I have always been a pack rat and have all of my old notes that were passed back and forth in middle school in my closet in Lynchburg. I am afraid to read them, but if I did, I'm sure they would reveal many similar dramas. They're a rite of passage.
