i arrived in bundaberg after dark and made my way to the cell block - literally. i stayed in a hostel that was a converted jail. it was pretty nice actually... my sheets even reminded me where i was staying - complete with ball and chain print. hilarious.
i woke up at 6am (surprise) and walked around greater bundaberg. nothing was open on a sunday morning (surprise). i did see the parks and the mini zoo and had a decent breakfast. watched the birds and the boats on the river and wandered around. later some things opened but not for very long. i walked to the bundaberg barrel and learned how they make my all time favorite drink - ginger beer. they actually brew it with yeast which is surprising. it is better than any other ginger beer i have had. had a few samples of their other beverages, and walked on.
next stop was the distillery where they produce bundaberg rum. i took the gold vip tour - the same as the other tours i found out - you just got two drinks instead of one. but the funny thing was they age the rum in oak barrels - made of white oak from the appalachian mountains of VIRGINIA! i laughed out loud and then had to explain myself. i don't think the germans thought it was as funny. but rum is rum - i had my few drinks and then carried onto the bus to get to rockhampton.
as always a few photos here
wayne, margot, hayley, and mick are AMAZING. i am excited to be staying with them and hearing of their travel adventures.
those sheets are hilarious ... they should put them in real jails.
